Change your wallpaper and send links to your phone with AppBrain

Do you have an image on your computer you would like to use as a background wallpaper on your phone? Or you just found an interesting article on the web and would like to send it to your phone to read it on the go?


Today we launched an update to the AppBrain app and website to make these tasks very easy:
  • To change your phone’s wallpaper go to http://www.appbrain.com/my_apps, use the “Set Wallpaper” link on the right, and copy the URL to the image in the dialog box or upload the image from your computer. After saving it will immediately install the wallpaper on your phone.


  • You can also share the image with others by adding it to the public gallery of images: http://www.appbrain.com/wallpaper
  • Sending a website is just as easy: Copy the link from the address bar into the text box and click the ‘Send’ button. In case of a link, it will immediately open the website on your phone, and otherwise it will copy regular text directly to the phone’s clipboard.
  • To uninstall an app, just click the “Uninstall” button as before. With today’s update this will immediately open the uninstall dialog on your phone and you just need to confirm.

To enable these new features please install the latest version of the AppBrain app and sync once, then you are ready to go.
The direct updates of wallpapers, links and uninstall actions require the phone to run Android 2.2 (it makes use of the C2DM framework). Older phones are supported as well, however you need to sync in the AppBrain app to update the background you selected or to receive the URL you sent.

  1. The size of the images are not always correct. (they are bigger than the screen) How can I set which part of the image should be displayed (like the way I can do it, when I manually set an image)

  6. Don't know where else to post this, but why does your site hang so much? It keeps loading and loading and it's slow. Also on the home page it keeps sending meto the bottom of the page.

    Using Chrome 6 latest stable version. Please do something about it.

  7. Also want to now where the wallpapers are stored, course after trying about 10 wallpapers i lost 2.5 MB on my internal storrage!!!!!

It's great that you have a text box for sharing a link with your phone.. if you could make it so that it would work with Keywords in Firefox that would be much more useful and practical.. it would then literally be possible to put a single letter behind the link in the address bar like "A" for Android and it would appear on your phone.. much more functional than having to go to the AppBrain page every time I want to share a link with my phone.. Fox To Phone(or Chrome to Phone) is much better in this sense b/c of merely being able to push a button in the browser for whatever site I happen to be on. Using a keyword would be better still.

  10. Is there some way to get the full image from the browser on PC? I want to set it as handcent background too so want to just download the wallpaper rather than set it automatically. I can't find the full size picture, only the sample

  14. Without knowing where they are stored in internal memory, the service has limited use as just to try a wallpaper out from the gallery I have to sacrifice limited internal memory space. Please tell where they are stored so I can move the images to the SD card.

  16. The current version of AppBrain does not store the wallpaper. It sends the URL of the image to the launcher app. The launcher then stores the image. (I assume in internal memory so that the image is available also without SD card)

    In the next version we will add an option to save the wallpaper to SD card.

  17. How do you get rid of wallpaper in Appbrain? I want to use a ROM's background and can't seem to find where I "unselect" or "uninstall" wallpaper.

  18. As I wrote before, I cannot find the wallpaper in the internal memory, I checked everywhere. I'd really like to remove it because it's taking up phone memory space

  21. When browsing wallpapers on the site, as of page 43 the thumbnailed images stop changing when you browse to the next page. I've had about a dozen people on various OSes&browsers confirm this holds true across windows, mac, and linux. If you go to http://www.appbrain.com/wallpaper#category=latest&o=504, and then click next, the URL changes, the bolded number changes, but the displayed wallpapers don't change. It works with &o=504 for any of the categories. I've tried reporting this bug a number of ways, and have yet to get so much as an automated response, let alone any indication an actual person has been made aware of the problem.
